FAQs
When does the season start?
We have a Spring and a Fall season. Typically, the Spring season games start around the end of March and run for six weeks. The Spring season ends before Mother’s Day weekend. The Fall season starts in early to mid-September, runs for six weeks, and ends around mid to late October.
---
When does practice start?
Typically, two weeks before games.
---
When are games?
Typically, on a Saturday morning/afternoon, but there is a possibility that you may have a game on Friday evenings.
---
Where are games?
Game day weekends rotate around the county and may be played in Delta, Orchard City, Hotchkiss, or Paonia.
---
Where are practices?
Practice and games in Paonia are held at Volunteer Park on Mathews Lane.
---
What does the practice schedule look like?
Individual coaches set their own practice schedule. Many teams hold practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but there are also teams that practice Mon/Wed or on Wed/Fri. There is no way to determine ahead of time on what day you may have practice. Most ages typically practice for an hour, twice a week.
---
Who will contact me about practice?
After teams are split, coaches will get their rosters and will call their own players to let them know when practice starts. Typically two weeks before the first game.
---
What equipment do I need?
All players must have shin guards and tall sock that cover the shin guards. Each player must purchase a jersey from Lasting Impressions. All Paonia teams wear the same reversible jersey. It is not required to purchase cleats, but most players will be wearing them. Football style cleats that have a center toe cleat are not allowed. Athletic shoes are acceptable, no boots. Players must wear shoes. Black shorts are typically worn, no pants.
---
How are teams split up?
Players are split evenly between teams based on age and gender.
---
Can I request a certain coach/teammate?
Of course, just add a note to your soccer form with that request, but keep in mind that all teams must have equal numbers and some requests may not be able to be fulfilled.
---
I have karate on Wednesdays, can I request a team that doesn’t practice that day?
See answer 6 above.
---
My child is very small for his age or timid or shy or new. Can he play with the younger ages?
Absolutely not. Our state sanctioning organization does not allow anyone to “play down” an age for any reason.
---
My child is very skilled and not being challenged. Can he play with older kids?
Yes, kids are allowed to “play up” an age group if deemed appropriate by the club and the lending/receiving coaches.
---
My child plays football/baseball/softball/etc. Can he do two sports at the same time?
There will be some overlap and possible conflicts. If you choose to play two sports, please let your coach know that you are doing so, and if there is a conflict, which sport is your primary choice.
---
We participate in the Easter egg hunt/school field trip/other activity. Will you schedule soccer games around these activities?
No.
---
My child always plays with his best friend, but now they are on different teams. What happened?
Our soccer year starts in the fall. If you are a U8 player in the Fall, you will remain a U8 player in the Spring. However, next Fall, you may have to move up to U10 based on your age. With kids of different ages in the same grade, it is possible that kids must move up, while others remain in the lower age group, even though they are in the same grade in school.
---
What age group am I in?
See the birth date chart on our forms. 8U typically means 8 and under. Same for the other ages.
---
My child signed up to play but they have not been called yet. They are in 7th grade.
In recent years, we have not had enough older players sign up in Paonia to form a U14 age team. Players may be able to join a Hotchkiss team if available.
---
I sent in my form in early February/July. Why hasn’t anyone called me yet?
We are busy processing forms from many families. You may not hear from anyone until 3 weeks prior to the first game.
---
Is this just a pick-up soccer league? Are there rules?
We are an organized league with rules, referees, and volunteer staff. We are sanctioned by the Colorado Soccer Association and United States Youth Soccer. We are only allowed to play against other sanctioned teams and all players must be registered with CSA for liability purposes.
---
Who is Delta County Youth Soccer Association.
DCYSA is an informal group comprised of individual clubs or recreation districts from Paonia, Hotchkiss, Surface Creek, and Delta. We all plan our seasons together and play each other.
---
My child is exceptional. Is there another league that can cater to their ability?
Delta County Youth Soccer has a competitive program that plays in the Mountain Region League. Tryouts are held in June for U11-U12 and U13-U15 players. Teams are gender specific. Additional costs and travel are required to play in this league. Contact your club representative for more information.
